Who here is a mango lover? I am! It’s my favourite fruit! Mangoes are the most popular summer fruit in India! I think all the kids in India can relate to enjoying eating mangoes on a really hot day. Delhi summers are super humid. Mango ice cream, lassi, or just plain mangoes are a perfect way to beat the heat! Seriously, Indians are obsessed with their mangoes. When it’s summer time and the mangoes are in season, everyone is going to go wild!
Ask me what my favourite fruit is and without hesitation I’ll tell you mango. Yes, I prefer mangoes over bananas! I find mangoes much sweeter than bananas, and that’s why I love them so much. I like to use mangoes so much in my sweet recipes, such as in this Healthy Mango & Vanilla Protein Ice Cream or Chocolate Chip Mango Puree Overnight Oats. I find that the mangoes in India much sweeter than the ones I’ve had in Canada, though the frozen ones in Canada are your best bet for sweetness, in my opinion.
After dinner in the summer, my sister and I would always enjoy some fresh mango for dessert. As much of a chocoholic as I am, when it’s blazing hot and humid, the magic of mangoes will simply refresh you in unexplainable ways and really cool you down.
What is a Lassi?
I’ll be honest with you and say that I didn’t really know the true definition of a “lassi” till I made this recipe! I just used the term regardless. When I’d be given a lassi, I was told “here’s your lassi.” Oh, okay! The only lassi I ever had was the plain one. I didn’t even know there were other kinds of lassi! My first mango lassi was at a restaurant in Canada about a month ago, and then after having that I decided to make my own! Am I really from India? Yes, yes I am, but I clearly don’t know about my own culture!
For you all to get the story straight and not to be confused like I was, “lassi” means any yogurt-based drink. You can have plain lassi, mango lassi, mint lassi, banana lassi, strawberry lassi… Essentially, a lassi is a smoothie that contains yogurt. Your base will be the yogurt, and that would be the plain lassi. Milk makes your lassi a little more liquidy and slightly creamier. If you want a very thick lassi, then omit the milk.
Furthermore, you can get even more specific with your lassi. This I really didn’t know about till a few weeks ago. You can have sweet lassi, spicy lassi, or salty lassi. I don’t think I’ve had anything besides sweet lassi. This lassi will be a sweet mango lassi. I’d love to experiment with the salty and spicy variations later!
Ingredients for Indian Mango Lassi
We only need 5 ingredients for this Easy Mango Lassi!
Fresh or frozen mangoes
Plain yogurt
Milk
Maple syrup
Almonds, for garnish (optional)
I’m going a bit untraditional with my lassi by sweetening it up with maple syrup. Typically, lassis are sweetened with table sugar. However, I wanted to make this lassi natural, so I’m using maple syrup, which is an excellent natural sweetener, and I’m going to fusion this classic Indian sweet with a fantastic Canadian ingredient! Additionally, I love the strong flavour of the maple syrup! That totally transforms the lassi into something unique! If you don’t have maple syrup, then feel free to substitute with honey or table sugar.
How to Make Mango Lassi Restaurant-Style
To make a restaurant-style mango lassi, you’ll also want to add in mango pulp. I couldn’t find canned mango pulp and I was using frozen mangoes. What you could also do is use fresh mangoes and get the pulp from the mangoes, then blend it up to make your pulp smooth. Using mango pulp will As you can see with mine, the lassi is a bit on the white side.
Can I Make Mango Lassi Vegan?
Of course! Just use a dairy-free yogurt and milk. However, I can’t guarantee you’ll get the same texture. I notice that dairy-free milks are much thinner than regular dairy milk. To achieve the same creaminess, I’d recommend reducing the amount of milk.
