What are Blended Baked Oats?

Blended Baked Oats are a viral TikTok trend and the new cool way to enjoy oatmeal! For those who don’t like the grainy texture of oatmeal, preparing blended bakes oats, especially this Chocolate Peanut Butter Baked Oats recipe, is your way to get all of the goodness of oatmeal without that chunky mouthfeel. As you can see, the end product looks like a fluffy cake, and let me tell you that it indeed tastes like a cake thanks to the egg, banana, milk and baking powder! On the other hand, “traditional” baked oats have more texture since the oats aren’t being blended into oat flour, and you’re not making a batter.

Questions You May Have!

Are Blended Baked Oats Healthy?

Yes, they sure are! Oats themselves are packed with nutrients, including fibre, iron, vitamin B1 and vitamin B5, and other minerals including zinc and folate. Oats can assist in improving blood sugar and they are rich in anti-oxidants. Bananas are also packed with potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and plenty of antioxidants and phytonutrients. Eggs contain Omega 3 fatty acids and protein. Additionally, if using dairy milk, you’ll get even more protein, plus vitamins E and D. Peanut butter is also an excellent source of nutritious fats and protein, especially if you’re using a high protein peanut butter. You can make the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats as healthy as you want depending on the ingredients you use, to be honest! As I mention in my free motivational guide to explore your potential in the kitchen, Make Cooking Fun!!, if you don’t have certain ingredients but have suitable substitutes, then go ahead and use those! For example, if you don’t have the cereal I’m using here, then that’s fine! You can use any peanut buttery cereal of your choice. Even if your cereal may be “regular” with some sugar, then don’t worry about it, unless you’re really going for the healthiest blended baked oats possible.

What Baking Dish Are You Using for Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats?

My ceramic bowls can contain 20 ounces, or 590mL, and they have the following dimensions: 2.4 inches deep by 7.9 inches wide at the bottom and 5.7 inches wide at the top, and it’s amazing for baking and for serving soups, such as French Onion Soup! I love the two handles on the side to safely handle the bowl when it’s piping hot - it really gives you lots of confidence and it does make a difference when taking out your super hot bowl from the oven! You could also use large ramekins or an oven-safe skillet if you’re making a really large portion.

Can I make Chocolate Peanut Butter Blended Baked Oats for One?

Yes! The baking dish I used is large enough to serve two good portions, but to make this Chocolate Peanut Butter Blended Baked Oats recipe for one, you can use a smaller baking dish or a large enough ramekin. Refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post to assist with scaling the ingredients so you maintain the correct ratios!

Can I Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats Vegan?

Yes, you can definitely make this Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats recipe vegan. You can omit the egg by creating a flax egg, which involves adding a tablespoon of flaxseed meal to 2 and a half tablespoons of water in a small dish, and allowing this mixture to thicken for about five minutes or so before adding it to the blender.

Do I Have to Use a Banana for Blended Baked Oats?

I love the banana in here because it adds some natural sweetness and really provides some thickness to the batter. However, if you’re not a banana eater for whatever reason or you don’t happen to have bananas on hand, then don’t worry about it! A common substitute is a few tablespoons of apple sauce, but you may want to add more maple syrup or sweetener depending on if you’re using unsweetened apple sauce or not.

Can I Boost the Protein in This Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats?

Sure you can! I’m using dairy milk here which is high in protein, and the Magic Spoon peanut butter cereal I’m using is high in protein. If you’re using a “regular” cereal that is not high in protein and/or plant-based milk that does not contain much or any protein, then you can add a scoop of protein powder of your choice in your baked oats batter. To go with the chocolate peanut butter flavours we’re looking for, I’d recommend a peanut butter protein powder or a chocolate one. Keep in mind that different types of protein powders have different textures and flavours, so your final product could come out a little drier. You can also boost the protein by using a high protein cereal, as I did here, and/or use a milk with added protein.

Does the Cereal REALLY Have to Soak for a Long Time?

Nope! You may have seen some cereal milk recipes where the cereal is soaked in the milk for hours and then strained. Who’s got time for that, especially if you’re looking for an easy breakfast that can be baked while you’re doing the rest of your morning routine! What we’re doing to expedite the process is to add the cereal to warm milk and bring this to a simmer. You’ll still need about 15 minutes for this step to allow enough time for the flavours to fully get absorbed into the milk, but in the meanwhile you can prep the other ingredients for the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats.

Can the Cereal Milk be Made in the Microwave?

Yes, you can make your cereal milk in the microwave if you would like! You can microwave the milk, and when it’s hot, simply pour the milk over the cereal. Allow the cereal to soak in the milk for about 15 to 20 minutes, then strain the cereal and proceed with the rest of the recipe as described.

Ingredients for Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats

The FULL PRINTABLE RECIPE CARD has all ingredient quantities and the recipe for you to save for later, so be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post or press the “Jump to Recipe” button for that. You can also scale the recipe based on the size of your baking dish and how many portions you’re looking to make. By default, the quantities below will serve 2, so if you are using smaller baking dishes, then be sure to distribute the batter and toppings evenly!

  • Milk: I’m using whole dairy milk here to get a smooth and creamy batter.

  • Banana: One medium sized banana that’s ripe or even overly ripe, if you have it.

  • Cereal: I used this Magic Spoon Peanut Butter flavoured cereal, sent to me by Magic Spoon! Thank you very much to them for sending this my way because this was the perfect cereal for this recipe! The peanut butter flavour is quite prominent, and the crunch for garnish was definitely on point! Additionally, this cereal is high in protein to help keep you full, and there’s no added sugar to keep this recipe healthy and appropriate for breakfast. If you want to try this cereal, then be sure to use code ANADI5 at checkout to save $5!

  • Oats: I’m using rolled oats. You could also make this Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats with quick oats, but you CANNOT use steel cut oats, so please do not try that! To see how to make delicious steel cut oats, instead check out this oatmeal recipe inspired by the Wild West!

  • Egg: One whole egg as a binding agent and liquid to ensure that our batter is not too dry.

  • Vanilla extract: Always essential for sweets to provide an exquisite aroma.

  • Baking powder: The leavening agent to make the blended baked oats base rise as it bakes and make it light and fluffy.

  • Maple syrup: This is my favourite sweetener, so I always have to go with it! However, feel free to substitute with honey if you would like. A liquid sweetener would be preferred here because it will mix better, making for a smoother batter. Since you won’t get any graininess, the sweetness will be distributed evenly throughout the batter.

  • Salt: As I do with savoury recipes, salt is crucial in sweet recipes because it brings out the peanut butter and chocolate flavours here! A bit goes a long way!

  • Cinnamon: A little pinch to bring everything together.

  • Peanut butter: You can use any peanut butter you want, but since I do really love chocolate and wanted to truly make this a Chocolate Peanut Butter Blended Baked Oats recipe, I went for 65% dark chocolate flavoured peanut butter! Of course, you could use a classic peanut butter, if you would like. However, make sure you use smooth peanut butter if you’re going to put this in a piping bag otherwise the chunky nut pieces won’t be able to come out of the piping bag easily, and it may result in a sloppy garnish.

  • Chocolate chips: I’m just using semi-sweet chocolate chips. You’ll want to add half on top of the batter once it’s in your baking dish before baking, and the remaining chocolate chips after about 15 minutes of baking.

How to Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats

Preheat the oven to 375 F.

Pour the milk to a saucepan and start heating on medium heat. Once the milk starts to steam, add cereal and simmer gently for 5-7 minutes. Set aside, off the heat for 5 minutes.

Strain the milk into a bowl using a fine mesh sieve and use the back of a spoon to extract any milk absorbed into the cereal.

Add the cereal milk, oats, maple syrup, egg, banana, vanilla, baking powder and cinnamon to the pitcher of a blender.

Blend until smooth.

Grease a oven safe ramekin or bowl with some olive oil and then pour the mixture in. Make sure to fill the bowl/ramekin about 3/4 of the way up. Add half the chocolate chips and loosely mix it around.

Bake for 25-30 minutes. When 10 minutes are remaining, add the remaining chocolate chips and finish baking - once done, the centre should still be moist but not liquidy.

Top with peanut butter and a sprinkle of cereal.

Enjoy!

Tips To Make the Most Delicious Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats

  • The most fun tip is to pick your all time favourite cereal and make the best flavoured cereal milk out of it.

  • Simmering the cereal with the milk will cause the milk to thicken and for a lot of it to evaporate. So nothing is better than preparing more cereal milk than you need and sipping on it once you have used what you need for the baked oats.

  • Use your favourite sweeteners, with sugar or sugar free, replace bananas with berries or melons and use an assortment of chocolate chips or peanut butter varieties to really make this recipe your own.

  • The best time to enjoy baked oats when they are the most delicious is fresh out of the oven. So grab a spoon and be ready!

Variations of Chocolate Peanut Butter Cereal Milk Blended Baked Oats

  • Base: You can make the base chocolatey by adding cocoa powder in the blender. Although it should have quite a prominent peanut butter flavour from the cereal milk, you could add peanut butter in the blender if you really want!

  • Cereal milk: If you want to switch it up, you can use chocolate cereal for the cereal milk and make the base peanut buttery by adding peanut butter.

  • Toppings: You can use a mixture of semi-sweet chocolate chips and peanut butter chips for more peanut butter flavour. I don’t recommend you use only peanut butter chips since they don’t melt the same way as regular chocolate chips (I can’t tell you why that’s just what I’ve found!). You could also add mini Reese’s peanut butter cups and mix and match different cereals for garnish. Additionally, instead of chocolate peanut butter, you can use any kind of peanut butter of your choice. You could even do a chocolate hazelnut spread, such as Nutella, or even make your own vegan Nutella! Lastly, if you want to add some cookie delight, you could top with Oreos, or even chocolate peanut butter flavoured Oreos!

Can I Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Blended Baked Oats in Advance?

Having enjoyed these baked oats fresh out of the oven, I believe attempting to prepare this in advance is an exercise in futility. The best part is that moist center, that cakey texture and the gooey chocolate chips. Baking these ahead of time would mean you either have to enjoy it cold, which could objectively be enjoyable or you need to reheat which risks drying these baked oats out. Neither of these options are superior to baking this dish fresh.

If you do consider preparing the mixture ahead of time, prior to baking, I’d recommend no longer than 3-4 hours ahead of time. Oats in a purée form, just like in overnight oats will start absorbing the milk, which will change the consistency and would need you to add or prepare more cereal milk, or water and cause inconveniences.
