You can find the FULL PRINTABLE recipe card by scrolling to the bottom of this post or by pressing the “Jump to Recipe” button to see all ingredients and their quantities. You will also be able to use the recipe card to scale the ingredients based on how many portions of hot honey you’re looking to make. By default, this will make about 2 cups.
Butter: You can use either salted butter or unsalted butter. If using unsalted butter, then you may want to add extra salt, if needed.
Hot sauce: I’m using Frank’s Original RedHot sauce. This will give a good amount of heat and a nice, smooth texture to the sauce. Additionally, it’ll provide the vinegar component a lot of hot honey sauces use (typically apple cider vinegar) for some tanginess and to prolong the lifespan.
Honey: It’s not hot honey without honey! You can use your favourite kind of honey. I’m just using some standard honey here.
How to Make Hot Honey
Melt butter in a saucepan and add the honey and hot sauce. Mix well to combine and allow the sauce to come up to a gentle simmer.
Once thickened slightly, remove from heat and serve.
Tips for Best Homemade Hot Honey
If the sauce is too spicy, add more honey and balance out the heat.
Or, if the sauce is too sweet, balance it out with a splash of vinegar and/or more hot sauce
Deepen the flavour with a pinch of garlic powder, smoked paprika, or a few drops of Worcestershire sauce.
A squeeze of lemon or a bit of lemon zest can brighten the sauce.
How to Store Hot Honey
Simply pour the hot honey in a mason jar or in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge. 1 week is the recommended refrigeration time for butter-based sauces since butter has been mixed with other ingredients. Due to this combined environment, the sauce is more prone to bacteria growth - hence in contrast why butter can be stored for much longer by itself.
This sauce freezes very well. Portion it into small airtight containers or even an ice cube tray. It’ll keep for up to 2–3 months in the freezer.
Variations of Hot Honey
I always encourage you to get creative and make recipes your own! You can indeed customize this hot honey sauce based on your preferences. Here are some suggestions:
Spice: You could also add some chilli flakes and/or chopped jalapeños or Thai green chilies to add even more heat to the hot honey. However, I see lots of recipes that only use these and not add a hot sauce. In my opinion, these will not be potent enough on their own without hot sauce, but these can be great if you want an extra kick.
Hot sauce: I’ve used Frank’s hot sauce, but you could also use Cholula if you want.
Seasonings: You could change the flavour profile by adding dried spices, such as cayenne, black pepper, or cinnamon.
How to Use Hot Honey
This Hot Honey sauce is extremely versatile! Here are just a couple of ideas on how to incorporate hot honey in your daily kitchen adventures:

Burgers: Just like they serve at your favourite fast food joint! This would be the perfect dip for my McDonald’s McSpicy Chicken Burger, Crispy Paneer Burger, or McAloo Tikki Burger.
Sandwiches: I can see this working really well inside or on the side of my Mozzarella in Carrozza, Authentic Croque Monsieur and Croque Madame, or my Baked Deli Chicken Sandwich.
Breakfast: It’s perfect with my Homemade Sausage McMuffin, Tim Horton’s Farmer’s Breakfast Wrap, Breakfast Burritos, Easy Cheese and Egg Soufflé, or Breakfast Bagel BELTs.
Pizza: I’ve loved this drizzled over pizza, it’s absolutely the perfect topping! Try it on my Cheesy 5 Pepper-oni Napoletana Pizza, Heart Healthy Chicken Pizza, or Paneer Tikka Pan Pizza.
Savory waffles: This will be amazing served over my Crispy Cheesy Savory Waffles recipe!
Fish & Seafood: Drizzle over Pan-Seared Curried Scallops, Lemon-Herb Baked Salmon or with some Cajun Shrimp!
