This Mocha Blueberry Protein Smoothie not only looks amazing but tastes wonderfully sweet and so delicious.

Smoothies are great for second breakfasts as I call them. What’s a second breakfast? The breakfast that’s after the first, duh! No, just kidding! See, I usually like to have a savoury breakfast to start my day off, such as my Classic Omelette, Fluffy Scrambled Eggs, or if it’s a weekend morning and I’ve got time, a Classic Breakfast Sandwich. Of course I have exceptions when I’ve got some overnight oats sitting in my fridge! I’m just saying that the general trend is I start my day with something savoury. I’m usually an early riser, so if I have breakfast at 7 am, I’m going to be so hungry by noon! I can’t wait that long till lunch!

That’s where second breakfast comes in. Now, at about 9-9:30, I want something sweet that’s not too hard to digest or to prepare, since I don’t really have the time to make some eggs or cheesy toast at this point! I’m going to satisfy my sweet cravings but still get in some health by either making a smoothie or a smoothie bowl! Ever since working remotely, I’ve had lots of fun experimenting with smoothies.

Before this point in time, I haven't made myself smoothies in a very long time but I've discovered a new exciting and simple recipe that is truly delicious! It can honestly be made in two minutes and tastes absolutely amazing! If you love mocha and want to get your berries in then this is the recipe for you! Enjoy!

How to Make Mocha Blueberry Smoothie

Smoothies rock! You just gotta dump things in a blender and the outcome is always yummy! For this recipe, you simply need to grab some blueberries, honey, milk, and protein powder, and instant coffee. Blitz it up and keep blending until everything is smooth. Easy peasy!

I love having regular old dairy milk. It’s just the tastiest to me, and I do find it makes the creamiest smoothies. If you don’t want to use dairy milk for whatever reason, you can use a variety of other liquid substitutes! Try the following:

  • Almond milk

  • Coconut milk

  • Your favourite juice!

I added honey in the smoothie to add a touch of sweetness. The blueberries are naturally sweet, but I like the little touch of honey to bring out the flavours. You can of course omit this if you find blueberries sweet enough on their own!

This smoothie is already extremely nutritious and will keep you satisfied. But if you want to add even more nutritional boosts, you could try putting in

  • Chia seeds

  • Flax seeds

  • Spinach

  • Pumpkin

I’ve added both spinach and pumpkin to the smoothies. If you don’t want to lose the lovely colour, don’t worry! You’ll only get a slightly darker colour because of both the spinach and the pumpkin. The mocha protein powder is the ingredient that affects the colour the most!

Do I Have to Add in the Protein Powder?

Nope! However, the protein powder boosts the nutritional content of the smoothie by adding lots of protein.

If you’re using dairy milk like I did, there will be some protein from the milk. On the other hand, if you want a little more, in addition to a thicker smoothie, then the protein powder is a great addition! If you’ve got a mocha-flavoured protein powder already, then no need to add the instant coffee! But if you want the mocha flavour AND the extra protein, you could add a vanilla or unflavoured protein powder plus the instant coffee powder, and the taste should be similar while getting your boost of protein!

In the photos below, I used vanilla protein powder and instant coffee in the smoothie, but when I first made this smoothie, I used a mocha-flavoured protein powder. The results are pretty much the same, so work with what you have!

I like adding protein powder to my smoothies because protein helps to keep you full. I really want this second breakfast to feel like a breakfast other than just a small drink, so I think it’s a great idea to add a tasty protein powder to enhance your smoothie. Also, as I mentioned earlier, the powder helps to create a creamier smoothie than without, and I really enjoy that!

Why Make Smoothies?

Why not! Smoothies allow you to add in lots of healthy food that our bodies need, and to have the food blended helps with digestion. Plus, if you incorporate smoothies for a second breakfast (or first!) like I do, or a snack for any time of the day, it’s convenient to just sip on your smoothie when you gotta get out the door! Of course I love to sit down and enjoy a meal, but in our busy lives, that’s just not always possible. But instead of picking up an unhealthy meal on the go, you can blend up a smoothie in five minutes, pour it in a bottle, and take it on the go!

The possibilities with smoothies are absolutely endless! I’m excited to share some more morning smoothies that have really kept me going in the morning before lunch! But blueberries are a terrific berry, and I’ve made so many blueberry smoothies! I found this mocha blueberry smoothie particularly worth sharing just because if you’re a coffee lover and want a gorgeous and healthy drink, then you’re going to love this recipe!

You could top it off with additional blueberries and maybe even some chocolate chips! Enjoy this refreshing snack or start to your day!
